The River Market's two outdoor, open air pavilions overlooking Riverfront Park, are filled with farmers selling farm-fresh produce straight from the backs of their trucks. From early morning until mid-afternoon, there are bargains on Arkansas crops. Among the list of fresh produce you'll find: peaches, eggplant, strawberries, watermelon, beans, peas, corn, herbs, plants, greens, tomatoes, plums, berries, goat cheese, beets, cucumbers, peppers, potatoes, squash, asparagus, eggs, cabbage, broccoli, zucchini, cherries, lettuce, onions, spinach, and radishes.

California

Santa Monica Farmers' Market


Where: Downtown 2nd St. & Arizona Ave.

When: Wednesday 9:30 am - 3:00 pm Saturday 8:00 am to 1:00 pm

Santa Monica farmers market is a wonder and delight for all senses. Asian greens and herbs abound, as do subtropical fruits such as passionfruit, cherimoy and several varieties of fresh dates. Or try the varieties of artichokes, large, extra large and the tres petite, especially great streamed with a touch of lemon and olive oil. Produce is featured on Saturdays, but you will find more farmers and shoppers there on Wednesdays.

San Francisco- Crescent City Market

When: Saturday 8:00 am - 1:30 pm

Where: Green Street at the Embarcadero

What does quail, chipotles, figs and lavender and all have in common? Other than combining into a very interesting stew, they can all be found at the downtown San Francisco farmers market. Wander past a wide array of yummy and delicious fresh produce some of it still dusty with the soil from that same morning. This farmer's market is particularly special because the communities surrounding San Francisco are some of the richest agricultural areas in the United States and are home to some of the most enthusiastic and organic farmers in California.

Monterey

Where: Oldtown Salinas Farmers Market Main St, Salinas

When: Wednesdays 3 pm - 7 pm

More than 40 booths line the 300 block of Main Street in downtown Salinas. Features artisans, prepared food vendors, ethnic clothing, entertainment, fruits and vegetables, flowers, bread, meat, nuts, honey and eggs. Rain or shine.

Oakland

Where:Jack London Square, Broadway & Embarcadero

When: Every Sunday, 10 am - 2 pm

Visit Oakland's largest Certified Farmers' Market, where Bay Area residents and tourists mingle in a relaxed seaport setting. Featuring farm-fresh veggies, locally-produced extra virgin olive oil, artisan breads, baked goods and dozens of other specialty food items. Come now for a stunning assortment of winter squash and other gems of the fall harvest. Also check out the fresh-cut flowers, potted herbs and other plants. Quality is excellent, prices are very affordable and expert-advice from the growers is free.

Sonoma Valley

Where: Arnold Field Parking Lot (1st Street West)

When: Friday 9 am- Noon. Open All Year.

While the weather may be raw and rainy in winter, this market is another one worth driving out of your way to get to, partly because it, like Healdsburg, tends to have a very regional kind of orientation. This is also a market where you'll find some of the better chefs in the county shopping on a regular basis.

December Harvest:
beets - carrots - radishes - turnips - winter squash - pumpkins - kiwi - persimmons - walnuts - granny smith apples - christmas trees, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, beets.

Colorado

The Boulder County Farmers' Market

Where: 13th Street between Arapahoe & Canyon, Two Blocks South of Pearl St. Mall at Central Park

When: Wednesdays 10 am - 2 p.m. & Saturdays 8 am - 2 p.m.

The Boulder County Farmers' Market was founded on the belief that local agricultural production is very important. Issues of food quality, appropriate resource use and local economic support are all elements of this belief. As such, the Market attempts to support local agricultural producers by providing a direct market for their products and by educating the community as to the importance of local agricultural production.

Hawaii

Where: Honokowai Market

When: Monday and Thursday 7:00 am to 11:30 am

Visit the market to sample locally grown fruits & vegetables, fresh made juices, fresh baked breads and muffins, assorted cheeses and fresh tropical flowers.

Seattle- Pike Market

Forget about that little software company up on the hill when visiting Seattle; rather head directly for the Pike Place Market, Seattle's true and deservedly claim to fame. Duck (or wear a mitt) as you walk past the fishmongers who toss whole fish from their icy beds to newspaper wrapping. Enjoy seeing the wonderful varieties of salmon from the slim coho to the giant king fresh from the Puget Sound and Sitka, Alaska, a fishing village located just up the coast. Be sure to sample some of the more unusual crustaceans plucked from nests to the pot at a steam bar. Paired with a Seattle Local beer, this is a perfect reality.
