Harvest in the Square
New York, NY: Harvest in the Square, New York's premiere food and wine tasting event, was held in Union Square Park on Thursday, October 4, 2001. This annual community event hosted by the 14th Street-Union Square Local Development Corporation (LDC) brought together over 40 of Union Square's finest restaurants and 1100 community members to celebrate the resilient spirit of our neighborhood. The LDC expects to have raised more than $100,000 for local and regional World Trade Center relief efforts.
Following the terrible tragedy that struck our nation, Harvest in the Square, originally scheduled for September 13, was postponed. Rather than cancel, the 14th Street-Union Square LDC decided to use the community event as an opportunity to thank the police officers, firefighters and all of the extraordinary New Yorkers who have bravely served their city in this time of crisis. Speakers included Eugene McGrath, Chairman of the 14th Street-Union Square Local Development Corporation, James Gabbe, President of the 14th Street-Union Square Business Improvement District, and Rafael Barinas, a student from Washington Irving High School.
In the midst of a particularly challenging time for New York's food service industry, the executive chefs and restaurateurs who participated in Harvest in the Square were given a chance to show off their most spectacular dishes while playing an essential part in this important community event. The 14th Street-Union Square LDC thanks all of the restaurants, sponsors, volunteers and patrons who made this event a success.
